Study v. Clean

Typically, as finals approach, students across the United States procrastinate by cleaning their respective living spaces. For me, cleaning instead of studying is typically the very last delay tactic I engage in to avoid studying. Today I chose to clean over study. I don't know what that says about my lasts semester thus far. Actually kinda worries me.

On the way back from Ghetto-BE to get some Tide and picture hanging materials I killed a squirrel. I feel awful. But its been a dark shitty kinda day.

This Craigslist post-of-the-day showed me the light. I am born again!

Friday...You Ain't Got No Job...Don't Remind Me

So its Friday once again and I am studying at ultra hip coffee place I don't belong. I do recognize at least three or four other law students here.

I partied way too much during the week. Had my fun, two worthy hangovers, and a run-in with a long lost ex-girlfriend. The one night I didn't party, my friend who shall remain nameless, ended up in an akward threesome with two married photographers from LA. Not so much becuase they liked him, but becuase of spite. My friend didn't have the foggiest clue either were married (beer goggle side-effect). Turns out one lady slammed the others in a taxi cab door. So when she got back to the hotel room she stripped and proceeded to jump into bed with my friend and the other woman. Just to piss her friend off. I mean, damn, thats a helluva a way to get revenge. As my friend described it, "cool, but akward." Even if nothing else happened this week, that story alone would have been enough to make me smile.

For those of you not "hip" to the Austin scene, and by that I mean you don't religiously read the Chronicle, please check out this weeks cover picture. Certain to ruffle a few feathers and ignite a few heated conversations.

Also, I though this was interesting. Turns out that it only takes a few Jewish holidays to get the President to promote the guy trying to send you to prison. No wonder the Dems are insisting on an independant investigator. In theory he couldn't be appointed to the federal bench to get him off Mobster Jack's Ass.

Tonite's plans.....OC reruns? Movie @ Dobie? Or Stand outside of the sold out show at Emo's? fuck it...I'll read evidence.

Throwing Stones At The Establishment, WestWing, and The Astros

So discontent with the legal establishment seems to be a prevailing theme this week.

As linked in an earlier post, NBC has announced that this will be the final season of the political soap-drama Westwing. I know for many law students, my self included, many-a-class have been missed to watch Westwing marathons. I lost the better part of a semester when the law school library got the complete series on DVD.

Sunday's episode "Duck and Cover" was one of the better episodes aired since creator Aaron Sorkin left the writing staff. Penned by former Gore speech writer Eli Attie, the episode mixed and balanced issues including nuclear energy politics, politicizing tragedy, and executive handling of domestic crisis. Anyone who religiously watched coverage of the Katrina disaster had to be running dual plot lines in their heads while watching Sunday's episode.

The Astros have announced that they will file an insurance claim on Jeff Bagwell's contract. Much like the Roger Clemens situation they were forced into in December, the Astros are facing a difficult PR position. Do what is undoubtedly best for the club at the expense of one of the classiest ballplayers and the face of the franchise? Or pay Bagwell 15 Million to hit once or twice a game. If the insurance doctors determine that Bagwell can no longer throw/play, Bagwell's career will be over.

Finally I want to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of John Rammington who passed away on Sunday. John worked at the front desk of the Law School library for over 20 years. He was incredibly kind, helpful, and open-minded. I had many a discussion with him on my way out from the library at 2AM during finals cramming sessions.

Alright, back to the grind.....two more weeks.

Party On The Weekdays, Study On The Weekend

I think I might have been a bit too gungho about my final semester. Waaaay too much to read in the first week of class. Combine classes with a part time job, some interscholastic competitions, and my addiction to air hockey on 6th street and I can see this semester devolving into an academic mess. Even moreso than last semester. Fuck!

Anyways, this coffee shop has me feeling like I'm not weird enough to belong. Sometimes I think people want so badly to be different that they become like everyone else who wants to be different. Self defeating? At the same time, these ultra hip/retro/trendy coffee shop environments are just fucked up enough to feel like home. It's really funny actually. I feel like an outsider at the law school with all the goal oriented future lawyers...and I feel like an outsider with all the trendy outsiders at the hipster caffeine junction. Do people exist in the middle of the spectrum anymore!?!?

Ok, heres a few links to entertain yourself while I read things I will have forgotten tomorrow:
1.) The University of Spoiled Children
2.) Goodbye Pres. Bartlett

You Remember That One Time When Cartman...

Car died today. Missed my first class of the semester....so it begins (see goal #1). Ended up walking the dogs to 'da Shores and ch.illing there for three hours If it were not for a fully loaded Ipod and Super Trooper sunglasses, it would have been a totally shitty day. Instead it was just unproductive.

Two blogs posts thus far chron(what?)icling the first drinking orgy of the semester. $2500 in 45 min, not bad.

$2500 Bar Tabs Are Common For Lawyers

Tuesday was my last first day of school. If I wasn't so damn tired I probably would have gotten sentimental. Since I've been in school for 20 years, I'm not entirely sure I belong in the "real world." I certainly can't imagine living with 6 perfect strangers and getting drunk everynight. Well at least living with 6 perfect strangers.

In honor of my final semester in an academic institution I've set forth several goals.
1.) Actually go to class
2.) Actually read the material
3.) Drink more
4.) Talk to more law students.
5.) Have a great time.

I know, some of these might seem mutually exclusive. But I'm certain you can talk to law students and still have a great time (see resolution #3). They can't all be evil spawn.

Also, I'm the proud new parent of a sleek 30gig Ipod. After three weeks of usage, I don't know how I lived without one. I've discovered that owning an Ipod is kinda like owning a Prius. Ipod owners acknowledge eachothers presence more often. I wonder how long it will be before Larry David writes an Ipod episode for Curb. Anyways, if anyone has good suggestions for new music I'm all ears. My latest Ipod addition is My Morning Jacket's "Z" album. Fucking fantastic.

Alright, time to dig into that bar tab....brought to you by People Who'd Like To Own Your Soul.

Uncle Vince Young

Classes are right around the corner. The Rose Bowl is slowly, very slowly, becoming a part of the past rather than part of the present. And grades are beginning to slowly pour, nay, trickle into the magical space on utexas.edu/law/students. This is my last semester, I shall not go without a fight.

So while I drink in celebration of the national championship, you can check out EDSBS.

National Championship

I was gonna break this whole game down on a position by position basis. But honestly people, I ain't getting paid to do this shit, so theres no way I'm doing that much work when I could be reading and drinking great wines. Now if I had classes to study for, I'da written a novel on the matchup.

At any rate I have identified several keys to the game:

1.) Texas must establish a rushing game early. USC has a suspect secondary (by suspect I mean, that they are good not great, which is more than most Big 12 teams can say). If UT can establish the run early, then USC will be forced to jam the box and give Vince single coverage.

2.) Fumbles, Ints, stupid penalties. Given that UT can realistically only hope to contain Reggie Bush (i.e. 200yds, 2TDs would be ideal), they need to make the most of every possession. USC leads the country in turnover margin. So if, as I suggest, UT must run to win, there are gonna be a whole lot of opportunities to put the ball on the ground. This is why Selvin Young and not Jamal Charles will start at RB.

3.) Be sufficiently drunk. This way, no matter what happens, you'll have a story to tell (or makeup). If UT wins, celebration. If UT loses, drink 'til ya can't remember.

Prediction: 34-28 Texas.

Rest In Peace "Blue"

A truly sad way to start the New Year. Only a Texans loss can salvage the first day of 2006.

Obligatory Happy New Years Post

So what do you think is the percentage of people who kick off the new year with a hangover?

I was lucky enough to not fall into that category. Sign of things to come? Here's to hope.
